Maths Makes Sense (MMS)

The children at Dunston Primary and Nursery school learn Maths using  Maths Makes Sense (MMS), a carefully designed maths programme that uses special vocabulary, physical actions and concrete objects (cups) to help them become confident mathematicians.

To give our children the best chance of becoming confident mathematicians, they need repeated practice with basic number skills. They need to know these skills by heart and to be able to use them easily.

Learning

The three main aims of the National Curriculum are fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

Aim 1

Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

Aim 2

Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

Aim 3

Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
